Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of the development kit?

We plan for this device to be released in two variants: The founders edition (CNC-milled aluminium enclosure) and rackmount edition (sheet metal enclosure). But because it takes a significant amount of time to certify those two, we decided to release the development kit for networking enthusiasts who want to get their hands on the device before it's certified.

How it the development kit different from either of the two final variants?

To achieve the best possible price for both final variants, we will of course have to optimize everything, from individual components, their capacities (in case of storage, for example) as well as the manufacturers. Wihtout sacrificing the performance, reliability and durability!

Development kits will undergo no such optimizations. Every part, component and manufacturer are what we consider the best in the industry, and we use this combination of the three to manufacture what we believe is the best possible quality not just of each individual part but also the device as a whole.

What operating systems will it support?

We plan to ship Gateway development kit with OpenWRT because we have tested it and know it works reliably. However, we also tested a number of Linux distributions as well as networking-specific operating systems (VyOS) and technologies (VPP + DPDK) so our goal is to not limit you to anything specific. If it compiles for ARM64 architecture, it will work on our device.

Will I be able to swap the polycarbonate case for CNC-milled aluminium one?

Yes! All early backers of the project will be able to purchase a CNC-milled aluminium enclosure and swap it out with the polycarbonate one that the development kit will ship with by default. This way you'll end up with the most powerful version of our PCB with the best looking enclosure!

Why Gateway?

Have you ever been frustrated with your router? We get, it, we have been as well, which is why we decided to do something about it. With Gateway, building a high-quality router is not the goal, it's just the beggining.

Our goal is, and has always been, to build a community of people who care about the security, transparency and reliability of their (home) networks, and we believe we can achieve that by setting an example - in the form of Gateway.
